The Pool Team.
Up until Danny Taggart and Gordon Smith of Croy became instrumental in founding the Kilsyth and District Pool League in 1977, travel had discouraged serious local participation in the Central Pool League. The local league encompasses Croy, Kilsyth, Queenzieburn and Twechar and two participating teams from Cumbernauld. Our local pool enthusiasts are preparing to celebrate their Silver Jubilee in 2003.
Once more it is good to record that charity is the name of the game, at least in good measure. With six singles games per evening and around forty-eight games per week, losers paying, about forty-eight pounds per week may go into the charities pot. Every two months each team in the League has the opportunity to nominate a local charity to be given £200. In addition, the winners of the annual Charity Rose Bowl Competition choose a charity to receive £300. It has been estimated that over the past twenty years or so a total of between £15,000 and £20,000 has benefited charities like Strathcarron Hospice, the Handicapped Children's Pilgrimage Trust and the local O.A.P.s' Luncheon Club.
This is a considerable achievement when it is remembered that there are only about fifteen parishioners in the local Pool Club. Each year the Jock Pender Millennium Trophy is hotly disputed in Croy, profits going to the Croy Miners' Social Club which hosts the poolroom.
